Go to Hindu mythology home page Durga
In Hinduism, a principal type of the goddess Devi or Shakti, and the spouse of
Shiva. According to legend, Durga was created for the slaying of the buffalo
demon Mahisasura, by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the lesser gods who have been
otherwise powerless to beat him. Embodying their collective vitality (shakti),
she is both by-product from the male divinities and the true source of their
interior power. She can also be greater than any of them. Born absolutely grown
and exquisite, Durga presents a fierce menacing form to her enemies. She is
usually depicted driving a lion and with eight or 10 arms, every holding the
special weapon of one of the gods, who gave them to her for her battle in
opposition to the buffalo demon. The Durga-Puja, held annually in her honor, is
without doubt one of the nice festivals of northeastern India.
