Jagannatha

Kind underneath which the Hindu god Krishna is worshiped at Puri, Orissa, one of the crucial well-known religious centres of India, and at Ballabhpur, a suburb of Shrirampur, West Bengal. The 12th-century temple of Jagannatha in Puri towers above the town. In its sanctuary, roughhewn wood pictures represent Jagannatha, his brother Balabhadra (Balarama), and his sister Subhadra. Some students suggest Buddhist affect within the threefold nature of the temple image. Trendy representations made in Puri of the 10 avatars (incarnations) of Vishnu usually show Jagannatha as one of the 10 instead of the extra normally accepted Buddha.

A very powerful of the numerous yearly festivals is the Chariot Competition (Rathayatra), which takes place on the second day of the intense fortnight of Asadha (June-July). The picture is positioned in a wagon so heavy that the efforts of a whole bunch of devotees are required to maneuver it, and it is dragged by means of deep sand to the nation house of the god. The journey takes a number of days, and 1000's of pilgrims participate. Reports of those processions previously have been much exaggerated, though accidents are frequent and sometimes a frenzied pilgrim attempts to throw himself underneath the wagon. The English phrase juggernaut, with its connotation of a force crushing whatever is in its path, is derived from this festival.
