Fourth of the 10 avatars (incarnations) of the Hindu god Vishnu. The demon Hiranyakasipu, twin brother of the demon overthrown by Vishnu in his previous
incarnation as Varaha, obtained a boon from Brahma that he could not be killed
by man or beast, from inside or outdoors, by day or by night time, and that no
weapon could harm him. Thus, feeling safe, he began to hassle heaven and earth.
His son, Prahlad, however, was a devotee of Vishnu, despite the fact that his
father threatened his life due to it. At some point the demon challenged
Prahlad and, kicking a stone pillar, asked: “In case your god is omnipresent,
is he on this pillar additionally?” Vishnu emerged from the pillar in the type
of a person-lion and slew the demon at nightfall on the threshold.
