Phenakite
Uncommon mineral, beryllium silicate, Be2SiO4, used as a gemstone. Phenakite has
lengthy been recognized from the emerald and chrysoberyl mine on the Takovaya
River, near Yekaterinburg (previously Sverdlovsk), within the Urals area of
Russia, the place giant crystals occur in mica schist. It also occurs within the
granite of the Ilmen Mountains within the Urals and of the Pikes Peak area in
Colorado. Other notable localities include Kragerø, Norway, and San Miguel de
Piricicaba, Brazil.
For gem purposes the stone is brilliant cut-i.e., with quite a few facets. It is
often colourless and glassy but may be wine yellow, pale rose, or brown. Its
indices of refraction are higher than these of quartz, beryl, or topaz; it's
consequently moderately sensible and should generally be mistaken for diamond.
Nonetheless, it's not basically use, and tremendous examples are seldom seen
outdoors personal or museum collections.
