Anemia and Pregnancy
How much iron should I take now that I'm pregnant?
Before conception, you probably needed about 15 milligrams of iron a day. During
pregnancy you will probably need twice that amount, since the volume of blood in
your body increases by nearly one half during pregnancy. If you don't have
enough iron to fuel hemoglobin production for you and your baby, you're likely
to develop iron-deficient anemia. As with most vitamins and minerals, food is
often the best source for the nutrients and minerals you need. Even following a
planned diet which is full of all the right food groups may not be enough to
give you the iron that you need, which is a good reason to take prenatal
vitamins.
Finding out if you are iron-deficient?
The routine blood tests you take throughout your pregnancy will verify whether
your hemoglobin levels are normal. Even if you're not anemic, or iron-deficient,
early on, you may become so later.
What are its symptoms?
Often you may not even know you have anemia. Fatigue is one sign, but that's
also a symptom of being pregnant.
How is anemia treated?
By taking iron supplements every day, depending on what your midwife or
healthcare provider may recommends. However it is important to know that large
doses of iron may cause nausea or even vomiting, particularly in the first
trimester.
Note: Iron supplements can cause constipation, so try countering the
effect by adding more fiber to your diet.
Can Anemia affect my baby's health?
Your body will ensure he gets adequate iron before you do, so you'll be short of
iron long before he is. Your baby will be drawing most dramatically on your iron
reserves 20 weeks into your pregnancy.
