Mahalsa Temple (mandir)
The
opulent Mahalsa temple (mandir) is likely one of the most well-known
temples in Goa. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahalsa, an
incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Hence the temple (mandir) can also be
because the Mahalsa Narayani temple, Narayana being another title
for Vishnu. The Mahalsa temple is positioned one kilometer afar from
the Mangueshi temple (mandir), one other distinguished temple
(mandir) in Ponda.
One other victim of the Portuguese immoderation in the course of the
Inquisition, the deity of the Mahalsa temple (mandir) was initially
located within the village of Verna in Salcete taluka. With the
threat of persecution looming massive, devotees clandestinely
transferred the idol across the river to the present place of Mardol.
The visually appealing define of the temple is augmented by the
six-storied 'deepstambha' or ornamental lamp pillar in the
courtyard. This splendid pillar is 40 ft in peak and has 21 rings of
100 fifty small lamps. An enchanting spectacle unfolds when it's lit
up with oil wicks on the yearly pageant day or Jatra. Apart from the
Jatra, the Jaiyanchi Puja held in August and the Kojagiri Pornima
are two other particular events.
