Nageshwarnath Temple
The temple (mandir) of Nageshwarnath is likely one of the most frequented
temples in Ayodhya. The temple stands tall amidst quite a few 'Matths' and 'Akhadaras'
that exist within the metropolis of Ayodhya. Nageshwarnath Temple (mandir) is
supposed to be established by Raja Kush, the youthful son of Lord Rama. The
pageant of Shivaratri is celebrated here with nice pomp and splendor.
There is a very interesting story behind the institution of this temple (mandir).
It is stated that Raja Kush misplaced his armlet, whereas bathing within the
Saryu. He tried to search out it however in vain. He turned much depressed
thinking it to be a nasty omen. The armlet was actually picked up by a Nag-Kanya
(Snake-damsel), who fell in love with him. She promptly returned the armlet and
won the admiration of Raja Kush.
It is claimed that as the Nag-Kanya was a devotee of Shiva, Kush erected this
temple (mandir) for her. The temple (mandir) has historic essence as well. That
is significantly because of the truth that Nageshwarnath has been the only
temple to survive until the reign of Chandragupta Vikramaditya; the rest of
metropolis had fallen into ruins and was coated by dense forests. It's claimed
that it was by means of this temple (mandir) that Vikramaditya was in a position
to find Ayodhya and the websites of various shrines here.
