Swamimalai Temple (mandir)
The Swamimalai temple (mandir) is among the six shrines dedicated to Lord
Subramanya. The Swaminathan temple (mandir) is associated with the legend of
Skanda having re-initiated his father Shiva, with the idea of the oneness of
creation of Omkaram. The temple (mandir) is constructed on a synthetic hill,
approached by a flight of steps. The presiding deity on the Swamimalai temple is
worshipped as Swaminathan. The Swamimalai temple (mandir) has three 'gopuram'
with three 'praharam'. The 'gopuram' on the southern side is decorated with
statues and has 5 storeys while the other two entrances have no gateways above
them.
Based on mythology saint Bhrugu, prior to an arduous penance, received the
blessing that anybody disturbing his mediation will half with all his/her
knowledge. The penance proved so highly effective that the holy fire emanating
from the pinnacle of the saint Bhrugu reached as much as the heavens, which
scared the Gods who prayed to Lord Shiva in search of his mercy. Lord Shiva
extinguished the sacred fireplace by placing his hand on saint's head. As a
result of it lord Shiva parted with all his data and regained them by learning
the Pranava mantra from Lord Murugan here.
There may be one other interesting legend behind the Swaminathan temple (mandir)
at Swamimalai. Once Brahma, the lord of all creations, was continuing to
Kailasa, when little one Lord Murugan requested him the meaning of the Pranava
OM. When Brahma did not reply, Murugan imprisoned him. Lord Muruga agreed to
expound the that means of OM to Lord Shiva if he accepted him as guru and
listened to the exposition as a committed disciple. It's the cause why the place
got here to be known as Swamimalai and the presiding deity at the temple as
Swami Nathan.
