A class of drugs including benzedrine, dexedrine,
and methedrine that act as central nervous system stimulants. Amphetamines
suppress appetite, increase heart rate and blood pressure, and, in larger doses
produce a feeling of euphoria and power. Therapeutically, they are used to
alleviate depression. They are also used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactive
Disorders (ADHD) in children. Amphetamine abuse is common, and chronic use leads
to paranoid
psychosis.
