Compulsion

Behavior motivated by factors that compel a person to act against his or her own wishes. Differentiate from obsession, in which the focus is more on thoughts and feelings than on behavior, and from impulse, in which the compelling quality is more sudden and satisfiable. Compulsion usually carries the connotation of repetitiveness and irrationality. See Obsession; Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
