A small group that focuses on intensive
interpersonal interactions (or "encounters"). The group usually has as its goals
the removal of psychological barriers and defenses, achieving openness, honesty,
and the willingness to deal with the difficulties of emotional expression. Group
members are encouraged to deal with "here-and-now" and to eschew
intellectualization and personal history. Encounter groups and their use in
psychotherapy began with the human potential movement.
