Simply, therapy based on giving the individual
something purposeful to do. It may be either physical therapy, in which the
tasks are designed to exercise and develop certain muscles and sensory motor
coordination, or psychologically oriented therapy, in which the work is designed
to improve one's general sense of self. In psychiatric hospitals, this therapy
seeks to have patients interrelate in organized groups while preforming a skill
(ceramic making) or taking part in an activity (volleyball). It is meant to
alleviate stress and boredom and absorb the patient in meaningful activity.
