Acquired characteristics
Variations that cannot be passed from parent to offspring. These
variations are not in the individual's gene pool. Lamarck (1809)
advanced the hypothesis that acquired variations are transmitted to
the offspring. According to him, structures that are in use are
better developed and preserved, whereas unused organs eventually
disappear. Characteristics thus acquired through use could be
inherited, he thought, by the next generation. Facts do not seem to
support his conclusions.
