Organisms that are able to change inorganic
materials into organic compounds. Among these are the photosynthetic bacteria
and the green plants that use light energy to produce food. The chemosynthetic
bacteria are capable of oxidizing the inorganic compounds of ammonia, nitrites,
sulfur, or hydrogen gas into high-energy, organic compounds without the need of
light energy.
