Paired structures that lie just outside of the
nucleus of nearly all animal cells and some cells of lower plants. They are
absent in cells of higher plants. Under the light microscope, the centrioles
look like two insignificant granules, but the electron microscope demonstrates
that they have a very intricate structure.
