Spiny-skinned invertebrates that include the
starfish, brittle stars, sand dollars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. Although
they do not look very much like vertebrate animals, the development of the
echinoderm embryo strongly resembles that of the chordates in the early stages.
The larval stage is free-swimming and shows bilateral symmetry.
