Saptakotishwara Temple
The Saptakotishwara
temple at Narve Bicholim in Goa is an ancient one, patronized by the
Kadamba
rulers of the region. This town is located at a distance of 37 km from Panaji,
the capital of Goa.
The Shivalingam
enshrined in the sanctum is known as the
Dharalinga.
The small Shivalingam just about half a foot in length projects out of a square
peetha. It is covered with a seated figure of Shiva, made of a composite of dark
colored cloth, and a sheet metal mask, arms and feet. This image is removed
during abhisheka ceremonies when abhishekas are carried out on the Shivalinga
alone.
The
temple is a fairly large one, and is over 700 years old. The sanctum is enclosed
in a vast courtyard and is crowned with a lofty shikhara. There are several
other shrines enclosed in the courtyard.
